How this calculator works
EPS expresses accounting earnings attributable to each weighted-average common share. It is a foundational input for valuation ratios such as P/E.
Formula
Worked example
$10 million of net income, $1 million of preferred dividends and 3 million weighted shares produce EPS of $3.00.
How to interpret the result
EPS expresses accounting earnings attributable to each weighted-average common share. It is a foundational input for valuation ratios such as P/E.
Assumptions & limitations
This is basic EPS. Diluted EPS requires additional securities and share-count adjustments. Accounting earnings can include non-cash or one-time items.
Practical context
When this calculator is useful
EPS is useful when converting a company’s total earnings available to common shareholders into a per-share figure. It is a foundation for common valuation measures such as P/E and for tracking changes in profitability on a per-share basis.
How investors commonly use it
Investors compare EPS across periods and against revenue growth, margins and share-count changes. Rising EPS can come from higher profit, fewer shares outstanding, or both, so the underlying drivers matter.
What EPS does not tell you
EPS is an accounting measure rather than cash flow. One-time gains, restructuring charges, stock-based compensation, dilution and share repurchases can affect comparability, and basic EPS does not capture every potential source of dilution.
