Stock Profit Calculator
Calculate your net stock profit or loss, transaction-adjusted proceeds and percentage return.
Enter your values
Understand your stock return
This calculator estimates profit or loss after the purchase price, sale price, share quantity and entered transaction fees.
Formula
Worked example
Buying 10 shares at $100 and selling them at $125, with no fees, produces a $250 profit and a 25% return on the original cost.
How to interpret the result
A positive result represents a gain and a negative result represents a loss. Compare the percentage return with the holding period and relevant alternatives rather than viewing the dollar gain alone.
Assumptions & limitations
This simplified calculation does not automatically account for taxes, dividends, currency movements, slippage or corporate actions unless incorporated into your inputs.
Practical context
When this calculator is useful
Use this calculator after a sale, before a planned exit, or when comparing possible price targets. Including transaction fees makes the result more realistic than simply multiplying the price difference by the number of shares.
How investors commonly use it
Investors use realized or hypothetical profit figures to compare outcomes across trades, evaluate whether fees materially changed performance and translate a dollar result into a percentage return that is easier to compare across position sizes.
What the result does not tell you
Profit alone does not show how long capital was invested, the risk taken, dividends received, taxes due or the return available from alternative investments. A larger dollar gain is not automatically a better risk-adjusted outcome.
